On Thursday 7 April, fifteen kids from Maungatapu Primary School learned about local biosecurity issues and the techniques being used to combat them, as part of TMBC’s educational programme ‘Tiakina Taiao’.
Using nature as the classroom, kids learned how to find and identify the Asian paddle crab and different marine trapping methods and surveillance techniques that are being used to protect our harbour. They also took a hikoi around Mauao to learn about local history, myrtle rust and kauri disease.
Rodney Voullaire, MPI’s compliance officer talke about our local fisheries and the kids were delighted to receive their ‘Junior Fish Officer’ badges on the day.
Thank you to everyone who supported this day, including our local kauri dieback ambassadors for volunteering your time to support our tamariki.
