The high-risk brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) season runs from 1 September to 30 April, when there is a higher risk of BMSB arriving as they hibernate in large numbers to survive the northern hemisphere winter. Since September, six live BMSB have been detected, with four of these in October. This compares favourably with the same reporting period in 2023, when there were 13 live detections. These interceptions are a timely reminder of the biosecurity threats we face and the importance of vigilance in protecting our nation’s $54.6 billion food and fibre sector, our environment, and way of life.
BMSB is a highly invasive pest that could cause significant damage to our horticulture and agriculture sectors, not to mention the nuisance it poses to households if it were to be established here. The detections highlight the effectiveness of our systems and are also a call to action for ongoing diligence, particularly in this high-risk season.
Let’s continue to work together, share knowledge and uphold robust biosecurity practices to protect our future.
